preventing gunshyness
R*okieEP said: Hello to all. I am new to this site, and has used a lot of the shared knowledge already. This past Dec. I rescued an english pointer. She was 4 months when I got her. She shows great intelligence. Great instinct w/ birds. Had only one accident in the house (which was my fault she stood by the back door, I ignored). But she shows fear with loud noises. Finally got her use to the vaccum cleaner she use to hide w/ fear. She use to get scared w/ my cap gun in the house, now she doesn't even flinch inside. She expects to get a treat or to fetch her ball when she hears it. What would be the next step in training? She has come so far and I don't want to ruin her?

Jerome Robinson, in his book, The Ultimate Guide to Bird Dog Training, has a complete chapter on how to prevent gunshyness. I think the same theories, advice and applications could help you transfer what you are doing in the house to the field. The chapter is not completely on point but I'm sure it would help. You can pick up a copy at www.gundogsupply.com (http://www.gundogsupply.com) or at Lion Country Supply. Hope this helps.

If you can't attend a Rick/Ronnie Smith seminar or Dave Walker seminar, then I suggest that you purchase Rick and Ronnie's DVD on the silent command system. It is great for the rookie. Dave has as excellent VHS tape called Meat on the Table. He also has a great tape on starting puppies. Rick's DVD is available at www.ricksmithkennels.com (http://www.ricksmithkennels.com) and Dave's tapes are available from www.davewalkerdogs.com (http://www.davewalkerdogs.com) Have a great day.
